Border Leicesters this time, twins (a ram and a ewe) born in the early morning, about 4am. They’re up and looking good.

Kinja'd!!!

The Borders are a bit more robust than the Blue Faced, and we typically just watch to make sure they’re ok. The Blues often require some help, be it in actual birthing or in making sure the lambs get dry and figure out the whole nursing thing. The Blues are generally not as strong on the mothering instinct either. Selective breeding for speciffic traits is a bitch sometimes...

It always amazes me how tough and tenacious a healthy lamb is. Unless they're suffering from a prenatal condition, the survival instinct and will to live is just amazingly strong. Even if the DO get chilled, warm them up and try again... They're downright inspiring little buggers.

We are members of a small sheep farmer’s facebook group and one of the sayings goes: “Sheep: the pet you can eat!” we skew toward the productive livestock side of things, but we have a few favorites that certainly behave like pets, and when their time comes they will most likely taste great... We’d love to be able to join the large sheep rancher’s group, but we’ve got a lot of growing and land restoration/acquisition to go before we can talk on level terns with W estern US ranchers or folks in NZ and OZ.

“Even if the DO get chilled, warm them up and try again”

I too follow this advice  when making a gyros platter for guests. It’s hard sometimes to get the timing right between carving up the meat and other toppings for ideal gyros construction.

You are doing better than us! We have no stock at all on our patch. Poor land management and drought have meant our arable portion of land isn’t really. So it’s under regeneration at the moment. If it recovers over the next few years then we may consider redoing the fences and commissioning a half dozen meat sheep (possibly Australian Whites) for grass management and lamb chop supply duties.

The poor land management by the previous owners is actually holding back our flock growth, but at least we don't have drought to deal with. Hope you can get some in-house chop supply in the not too far future!
